Saying Goodbye to Kindergarten

As many of you know, Rory attends a school that is 12-months or more commonly known as "year round". And while other kids are in the middle of enjoying their summer breaks, we are still trying to finish up the school year. Between swim lessons and pool playdates, we have been busy with a school garden project, variety show and finally his kindergarten graduation!

Rory's school has a garden that all the students are responsible for tending to. And in an effort to raise funds for the school, the students and their families were invited to decorate a paver to be placed in the garden. And while Rory and Rian weren't keen on the idea that they had to collaborate on the design of one paver, we managed to make it work.

Poor Rory, every time he would paint something Rian would drag her paint brush over it and turn his design into a swirl of green and blue paint.

I have to admit that it's not the prettiest, but it's ours and I couldn't be more proud of it!

For the last few weeks, Rory and three of his friends have been working hard on their act for the school's variety show. I'm so proud of them for committing to all the after school practices and rehearsals.

Heading to the final performance on Tuesday night.

Rory was so excited that Nama, Papa and Grammie were coming to see him and his friends perform!

The cutest Ghostbusters ever!!!

They did such an amazing job! They did a short six-year-old-coordinated dance to the Ghostbuster theme.

The next day Rory had his kindergarten graduation and was promoted to the first grade (although he still has to go to school next week).  Class of 2028!!!

Rian had to bring along some friends!

Crossing over the bridge to first grade to get his promotion certificate.

During the program, every time he sang a song, I started balling. Tears just poured like a monsoon and I couldn't hold back the flood of emotion that I felt. He has grown so much this year and gives his all at school. He takes pride in his work and has excel beyond my every expectation.

Waiting with his class to be presented with his attendance award

Governor's Exemplary Attendance Award

Each student drew a picture of themselves to be included on the class t-shirt.

Goofing off with Papa!

Family photo fail!

Better?!?

Thank you guys for making the trip out to help celebrate Rory!

Ghostbusters transformed into to Graduates

And to celebrate, a Grammy-sponsored trip to the Lego store! Don't let Rian's face fool you, she was able to spend her birthday gift card that Grammy gave her last month!!!

A spider man balloon, more Legos, some Lego shirts and a chocolate cake from Nama and Papa to top off the celebration!

And just when I thought the festivities were over, yesterday Rory got to stay home from school when the school's air condition went out. We may not have snow days here, but we have "heat days". No air conditioning on an 111 degree day does not go over well with anyone!!!

Rory picked out his teacher gifts this year and I couldn't be more proud of his thoughtfulness.

So with Rory's teacher gifts delivered today, we are ready to close this chapter and prepare for the next one that awaits.

Yesterday as he was finishing up is last homework assignment I couldn't help but to remember those first few weeks of the school year when we sat at the same table trying to work on the alphabet, the correct size of upper case letters in relation to lower case ones and repeating the th sound versus the f sound so that when he counted fourteen did not sound like thirteen. Now all those tasks are no longer tasks and the struggles seem so long ago, and yet it wasn't. He has taken all his struggles, frustrations, challenges and triumphs and worked his way into a student we a so proud of. He is no longer a shy little boy that was hesitant to walk onto the kindergarten playground on that first day of school. He is now a Ghostbuster that the older students recognize in the halls, he is now part of his own circle of friends that he can't wait to see in the morning, he is now ready to take on first grade!

And with that I will wipe away the tears rolling down face. I hope everyone has a great (and cool) weekend. :0)

Nothing But Water

We are in the middle of the dog days of summer and the only way to survive the heat-filled days is to jump into some water! And that's exactly what we've been doing. From our tiny dog pool to swim lessons, to hotel pools to our friends' pools, we've been pool-hopping all over town.

The city of Henderson has this great pool that Rory is dying to go back to so that he can ride down the water slide. We definitely will be here again before the summer is over!

Swimming with Nama and Papa is the best!

This was Rory's last summer in lessons. He did such a great job and the kids's teacher is the best.
Doing the backstroke

Swimming freestyle

Rian however did not do so well the first few days of her lessons. She hated doing the activities with the younger kids and screamed the entire time. Once her teacher modified her activities, she loved it and we couldn't get her out of the pool. She loves the water!

I hope you all are keeping cool this summer! As you can see we are doing our best. We are busy finishing up the school year and have a few more activities to attend before Rory says good-bye to kindergarten in a few short weeks. (Yes, he is still in school! The down-side to a 12 month school year :0( ) I will be back next week to share all that we're up to. Until then, have a great weekend!!!
