First Day of 1st Grade

How is it possible that Rory finished kindergarten and started first grade in the very same month?!? Haha that's just how things are done around here. Last Friday we had a meet and greet with his teacher, only to find out that the school is still in the process of hiring his teacher. So with the long-term sub assigned to his class being out that day, we took a quick look around his classroom, found his seat, chatted with some of the other parents and then headed home. Easy peasy, right?!?

The summer shag had to go

No matter how many times we discuss his hair and the different styles he could have, Rory still likes his hair flat as a pancake.

Then Rian got a haircut, a much needed haircut

She's three years old and this was only her second haircut!

She's so fancy, never mind the chocolate smudge all over her face.

Star Wars EVERYTHING! Rory wanted all his school stuff to coordinate. (He's so my son!!!) I even got Star Wars fruit snacks, per Randy's suggestion.

Rian got a few new school items. So the plan with her is to enroll her in a few preschool prep classes in order to get her ready for preschool next year. I'm planning on starting her in the classes in October or November. And I'm pretty sure she won't need any of the supplies, but I imagine I'll be taking her on some lunch playdates with her friends, and she could use a new lunch bag. And festive notebooks, matching pencils, and a cute pencil case will never go to waste on Rian. Let's face it, new clothes are always welcomed too!!! Rory actually picked out her tees to coordinate with her supplies, a black and a grey tee to match his black and grey ones too.

It's amazing how just a few short weeks ago he was nervous to start first grade and now he was beaming with excitement. Last night Rory kept saying, "Tomorrow is going to be my favorite day!", "Tomorrow is going to be a big day!", "I'm so excited for tomorrow!" I let him pack his snacks for his lunch before bed, a routine that my mom did with us as kids...a fruit, a bag of chips, and two snacks. (I added his chicken this morning) Two hours after bedtime, Rory was still struggling to fall asleep. He was genuinely happy to start his adventure as a first grader. When I woke him up for school, he popped his eyes open and was on his way to get ready! If only it was this easy every morning, the novelty will wear off by the end of the week. :0(

So remember when I said that Rory's meet and greet was easy peasy? Yeah knowing who his teacher was would've been helpful this morning. Well, this morning's drop off was a mess, not to mention overwhelmingly crowded. This year's drop off is in a different part of the school than last year's, so even though we discussed the new procedure, Rory was completely confused. He had no idea where his friends were, no idea what his teacher looked like and had school staff herding kids left and right. He lined up in the wrong class, resulting in myself and the rest of the Ghostbuster parents yelling directions to his class line from the gate. Not so easy peasy! He eventually found his class and all was well. Phew!

On the chalkboard this year...
LIKES:
the colors green and red (welcome to the club red!)
Legos
Star Wars
Ghostbusters
strawberries
peanut butter sandwiches

DISLIKES:
spiders (four years running)
bad dreams

And well Rian cried all the way to school because I didn't include any of her stuffed animal friends in her new lunch bag tote. How was I suppose to know that My bag! My bag! meant throw every stuffed animal I own into one of the smallest bags I have and then bring it to me?!? My bad! At least she let me take an outfit pic, after all she's a professional. ;0)

Well I better go, thanks for sharing the first day of school with us. :0)

Headed West

With Rory starting school on Monday, we wanted to squeeze one last trip in before the hustle and bustle of daily routines begins. So once again we packed up and headed west!

Anything to keep us entertained...
music...

video games...

binoculars...

even hide & seek! Seriously, Randy started counting and she hid behind the binoculars! Whatever works on hour three of a road trip,

As we drove down the Cajon Pass we could see the aftermath of the Blue Cut fire. It was really sad to see the mountain scorched and there were workers along the highway repairing utility lines. You could see the remains of the red lines from the planes' efforts to fight the fire, the left side was green and left untouched while right of the red line was stripped and black.

Once we made it into town the kids jumped into Grammy's pool!

Taking a ride in the bug!

We originally planned this trip so that we could go to a Dodger game, but the next morning our plans were scrapped so we surprised the kiddos with a trip to Knott's Berry Farm!

Rian's favorite ride! First things first... the boys headed to the Sidewinder and I took Rian for a ride or two, or three on the Camp Bus.

Tickling feet is a big brother right

Doing his best to convince Randy why it's a good idea to ride Sidewinder again for like the 5th time...

Waiting on the verdict...

Of course he won!!!

She is finally tall enough to ride the ferris wheel!

I love the park's fruit stands. They are the cutest.

All was ok until these campers decided to take walk down to the audience. That's when Rian climbed up on my lap.

Well the giant Snoopy did not come home with us, but these guys did. Daddy is the best when it comes to carnival games!!!

Stuart at dinner

After a day at the park, a morning by the pool is exactly what we needed.

Papa's Surfing 101 classes in the pool

Getting some much needed color

She was asleep less than two minutes in the car.

Playing hide & seek. The car version isn't very challenging, but it sure is entertaining to watch them try and hide.

And with that our trip was over.

Thanks for stopping by. I'll be back with how we are preparing for the upcoming school year! :0)
