Life Lately

Life lately around here has been filled with lots of fun: early Saturday mornings, a blast to the past, and an item crossed of our fall season bucket list.

For the last few weeks or so we Rory and I have been getting up at the crack of dawn for our Saturday morning soccer practices, and Randy and Rian join us for the games after to watch Rory and our team give it their all on the soccer field. He's doing really well and has scored 5 goals over the span of 4 games. Last week poor Rory took a ball to the face as goalie. He's was a champ though, after a few tears, a quick examination to make sure there were no broken bones, he finished the quarter out defending our goal. Oh and the ball that his face blocked? NO GOAL!!!

Rian spends most of the time following me around the sidelines and on to the field and she gathers around with the team after the game for snacks. A couple of weeks ago, during a timeout I was huddled on the fieid with my team, and the ref says Umm, there's a baby behind you. Yeah I know! More times than not she's wrapped in my arms just going with the flow.

I made Rian a couple of t-shirts to wear during the games.

And well this little baby rattlesnake decided to make himself comfy on the sidelines for our first game. The park where we play boarders the open desert and I'm sure this little guy was just trying to find some shade under Randy's chair during the ridiculously hot morning. My friend, her husband, and Randy managed to secure him and Randy took him back to the "wild". Thank goodness none of the kids were around when decided to coil up for an early morning nap.

A couple of weeks ago I hosted my very first book club for The Astronaut Wives Club: A True Story by Lily Koppel. This is the book that inspired this summer's TV mini series of the same name. If you are not familiar with either, both chronicle the lives of the astronauts' wives during the Space Race with Russia from the late 1950's to the beginning on the 1970's. I've always been drawn to the mid-century era and have thought that I was born twenty to thirty years too late. So I may have not been a sixties housewife, but at least I got the chance to host a potluck gathering like one!

Rory added to the space theme with an astronaut and command center lego display.

Where modern meets the past: The original Mercury 7 Asrto-wives and a model of the Endeavor space shuttle.

To the moon and back. The Gemini radio belonged to my mom back in the 1960's. And it was fitting since the second generation space ventures were called Gemini missions.

My astro-kids, minus the flip flops

A few years ago my SIL gave my this electric buffet warmer that belonged to my MIL. I believed it was a wedding gift to my in-laws in 1964. Thanks Syd, an original sixties housewife! I have never used it in the fear it will catch fire,  but I would never part with it. So I decided that it would be perfect on the food table for both function and theme.

We had a jello mold with fruit, pock-a-dot macaroni and cheese with hot dogs and the long awaited cheese porcupine with eyes and nose made of olives and pretzels for pines! There was sweet tea to represent Houston, Texas, the home of the space-burbs and wine. I originally asked Randy to help me create cocktails of this era, but he said that cocktails of that time were basically hard liquor and ice and did not recommend them for us. So we stuck to our wine, the drink of choice for us modern housewives. (Haha, that sounded just like a tag line in a 1960's advertisement.)

He's almost too cute to eat! And I have to say that he was way cuter than the original cheese porcupine in the TV show.

Rory gave it a shot as our photog. And after many photos similar to this...

...and this....

....we finally have a winner. A little blurry, but not bad for a five year old!

I guess the sixties have made its way into my own world. I have my own space-loving kid. Rory is starting to shift his interests a little toward space. And my parents recently visited the California Science Center and picked up the space shuttle for him. He looks like an astro-kid waiting for his dad to come home from a space mission.

And the 1965 VW bus tent has made its way out for the kids to play in.

And my own version of themed food for my kiddos!

I love moments like this.

I tell you, taking a nap with littles ones around is almost impossible. I'm not a fan of naps anyways, but with our early starts on Saturdays, some times a nap is necessary. One little monkey...

Two little monkeys

My poor sweet baby has been teething her two year molars and like all the other teething episodes, it's kicking her butt. Why are they so cute when they are asleep?!?

She did manage to wake up in time to watch the Bronco game with me. Some times being a fan can be rough, No worries, Rian, they won!

A few months ago I was going through Rian's doodle pad and came across this little gem. Now, I know that she did not intend on drawing an abstract pumpkin, but nevertheless, I snagged it out of her book and framed it.

I'm pretty sure that if we had a farm we'd be broke!

On Sunday we decided to run a few fall-inspired errands, complete with a costume purchase, a trip to Starbucks for a pumpkin spice latte and a surprise stop at the pumpkin patch (which will be the first of many). And since pumpkins were at the top of my fall bucket list, I'd say we can check it off the list.

Trying so hard to pick it up!

Oh don't mind the puffy eyes, the nigh before was a doozie with a teething toddler that was fighting a fever. At least she found the I Love Lucy mini marathon at three in the morning to be entertaining.

It had rained a little right before we got there and the dark clouds made for the perfect backdrop to our evening out.

And I just had to bake some Halloween sugar cookies for dessert.

And my days would not be as sweet without an us-ie with my boy.

Someone is ready for Halloween. Now if only the weather would get the memo and start to cool down.

Thanks for stopping by. I hope everyone has a great weekend. Until next time...
